The term seems to have been derived from "clank", which is an onomatopoeia for the sound of metal hitting something, and the "-er" suffix, meaning one who is/does. Thus, "clanker" essentially means "one who clanks".

CLANKER

The original definition before being used as the N-word equivalent for robots and AI, CLANKER, was slang referring to someone who is sexually attracted to robots and AI like how 'clopping' is used for a person having sex with a horse, because that’s the sound it would make. CLANKER was invented for the same reason — as the sound it would make if you F’ed a robot.
