Alexandria was founded in 1749 and was home to the Franklin & Armfield Slave Market, one of the largest slave trading companies in the country. By the 1830s, they were sending more than 1,000 slaves annually from Alexandria to their Natchez, Mississippi, and New Orleans markets to help meet the demand for slaves in Mississippi and surrounding states. Mount Vernon the home and resting place of George Washington located south of Alexandria. It is known for its many sophisticated colonial homes along the river as well as tours of the plantation and more than a dozen outbuildings including the slave quarters, kitchen, stables, and greenhouse. Alexandria is also home to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial which was designed to be identical to the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt. The city itself was built on freemasonry as there were many famous masons to live there. There are many parts of the city to explore such as Del-Ray, Arlanda, Old Town, West End, North Ridge, and many areas outside the city limits although they carry an Alexandria postal address. There are many sites of interests in the city and being 6 miles from Washington D.C. it's hard to run out of things to do. Virginia is for lovers.
