An expression mainly used by dancers before they go onstage. It’s French for ‘shit’ but they say it anyway because it’s been a thing for over 100 years.

“Merde!” Said Shea before the prima ballerina made her way onstage.

Merde

Means "shit" (literally or interjectional or figuratively).

Means also "good luck" when said to someone who will accomplish a performance or pass an exam.

Merde ! Fais attention où tu marches ! Il y a de la merde partout dans ce parc ! Shit! Pay attention where you walk! There is shit everywhere in this parc!
Ce travail, quelle merde ! This work is really shit!

Usually used to describe a group of people/entities with very malicious instincts; generally among the context of murder or serious killing.

Those merds are gonna gang up on the town if the cops don't show up anytime soon.
