A term used by African and Caribbean immigrants to describe a small subset of African Americans that identify as FBA (Foundational Black American) who deny being the same race as an Africans because of their European last names, and believe Africans & Caribbeans are a bigger threat than the white supremacy that killed Martin Luther King. Because tether was often used as an insult against them, African Americans (FBA) and their leader Tariq Nasheed "reclaimed" the word. Tether can now be seen used amongst African Americans to insult Africans & Caribbeans.

A melanated person who is NOT a foundational black American that uses their melanin ("blackness") to undermine black Americans (FBA). Tethers typically use their "blackness" to act as a representative for black Americans (FBA) for the benefit of their (white) handlers while having disdain for black Americans. Tether can be used as an action noun or as a verb.

Barack Obama is the textbook definition of a tether who used his blackness to get the black vote while not doing anything specifically for black people (FBA)
