The difference between a smart person and a smartass is that a smart person will answer you correctly without being an asshole, but a smartass is not only an asshole, but they're an asshole that gives you an answer everyone already knows or they give you an answer that's half right.
Person: "Compared to 2023, the year 2000 was a year with no pandemic, no mass shootings, no terrorist attacks, no smartphones, no social media, etc..."
Smartass: "You're an idiot, bad things happen all time, you're just not aware of it. Also, smartphones already existed, they're just clunky and not as popular."
Person: "I know that, smartass. I'm just trying to make a point that the year 2000 isn't as bad as it is right now, asshole."
