Narrative Surfing

A populist-esque phenomenon. When someone adopts position after position because the position’s in-group popularity or astroturfed popularity.

This is most often done to increase (social) media engagement rather than being a sincerely held belief or only becomes a sincerely held belief as a result of its popularity and not its rationale or substance.

Surfing from narrative wave to narrative wave of popular opinion among one’s in group.

why are conservatives now supporting abortion and gay rights?
