gnarley

Contemporarily, "gnarley", as used in Hawaii, means: (1) rugged, difficult, burley; or (2)nasty, rank, disgusting. Quite different from the stereotypical-SoCal-surfer usage of the word.

(1) -Dude, that test was so frickin' gnarley!
-I know! I definitely got worked.

(2) -Somebody passed out in their own barf at that party last night.
-Awwww, gnarley!

gnarly dude

A phrase that non Southern Californians usually east coasters think is only something people say in the movies, when in fact we use it all the time, along with awesome, stoked and rad. Mostly a coastal term, but also used in the inland empire aka the land of the dirt people.

It describes an impressive event whether it be positive or negative.

That crash was fuckin gnarly dude!

I'm so stoked for the party tonight! It's gonna be gnarly dude!

Gnartist

Someone who makes creative use of the word gnar.
Although utterly ridiculous, even non-gnartists can appreciate this skill.

Matt: "Dude, gnar we there yet? We gotta shred gnar PRONTO, but first I'm gonna gnarf some pizza."

Rich: "Shut up man, your breath already smells enough like gnarlic"

Mike: "Wow, you guys are gnartists"

Despite bastardization in recent years to the alternate (Read: "Gay") spelling, Narley, gnarley is akin to rad - a late-1980s - early-1990s term, meaning "exceptional", or "cool". Developed on the West Coast, and used primarily by sufers and skateboarders.
