libertarian

A libertarian is someone who believes that you should have the freedom to do whatever you choose, other than to hurt or take away that freedom from someone else.

The only reason for the government is to make sure that people don't take away freedom of another person. Any extra rules enforced are not needed, and are an invasion of personal liberty.

Liberal Media Bias

The myth often promoted by hard core conservatives that they or their views are not treated fairly by the supposedly liberal media. This notion comes from various surveys that show that a typical sampling of journalists are likely to be slightly more liberal than average.

However, using such surveys as proof overlooks the much harsher realities. First, all major media outlets are owned by large corporations that have pro-big business and low regulation preferences. Secondly, where news agencies were once considered a public service they are now seen as having to be self supporting through advertizing. And, advertizers tend to favor a pro-big business point of view. Third, Fox handpicked its staff to be conservative even more so than CNN. Fourth, radio is quite extreme in its conservative to liberal ratio. In 2004 Air America which was the biggest liberal radio network was only broadcast on 14 radio stations compared with 5,000 that carried Bill O'Reilly, Hannity, and Rush Limgaugh and another 4,000 that carried consevative religious programming. In fact, through most of its history MSNBC was conservative like CNN having such hosts as Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson and Imus for its morning program. MSNBC has since become more liberal in primetime with Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow but nevertheless retains a strongly conservative slant with Morning Joe.

The liberal media bias excuse when invoked is similar to justifications used by alcoholics to dismiss their addiction. It could also be viewed as an ad hominem attack to dismiss bad press in much the same fashion as dismissing the members of a particular race, religion, or heritage.

Liberator

A fictional starship featured in the first three seasons of the BBC television series Blake's 7.

The Liberator was an abandoned spacecraft found drifting near Cygnus Alpha, it was equipped with powerful weapons, force field protection, and a system of "battle computers". The ship was originally built by a race of beings known as "The System". The System referred to the ship as DSV2 ("Deep Space Vehicle 2")

liberal

Unfortunately, nobody on here has truly captured the meaning of "liberal." Liberal inherently implies desiring change or reform of the current system, whatever that system may be. Conservative is obviously the opposite; it describes something or someone who wants to conserve the status quo and reject change.
Some people get confused by the notion that the United States differs from the rest of the world in terms of its usage of liberal and conservative, but it does not. The reason it does not is because the economic system in place at the foundation of the US was based in a free market, not a restricted one. Therefore, in the US, fiscally conservative implies wanting to conserve what was originally present, a.k.a free market capitalism. Liberal economics in the US obviously steer away from that since, as it was already pointed out, liberal implies change.
In most other countries of the world, liberal economics implies gradually freeing markets more (becoming more capitalistic), instead of less. To some people (see previous posters), this is opposite the system we use in the US, but IT IS NOT. Liberal economics, a.k.a changing the economic system, in other countries means becoming more capitalistic because they originated from oppressive economic systems.
In summary, liberal means advocating change and conservative means advocating conservation. Those definitions apply EVERYWHERE. They may appear opposite in different places, but that's only because the "status quo," or the situations, in those places differ.
person 1: If JFK ran for office today, then he'd probably run with a conservative platform.
person 2: You're absolutely right, because what was liberal in the 1960s is conservative today. That's because the situations have changed, but the terminology hasn't.

internet libertarian

internet libertarians are usually two or more of the following: white, nerdy, male, suburban, (hostilely) atheistic, and well-off. they usually have close-knit, supportive families as well. a true internet libertarian has never lived for long periods of time in anywhere but an affluent suburb. they are naive, sheltered fucks to a tee. they also tend to be less smug and vocal about their politics IRL - they fear (more) social rejection.

internet libertarians are mostly Randites and Ron Paul Revolution groupies. you will find them preaching their Pollyanna-like views of wanton deregulation/decentralization/isolationism in any sufficiently nerdy online venue - think Slashdot, Reddit, or an imageboard with a political discussion section.

they tend to be excessively fond of dense, idiosyncratic video games like TF2 and Minecraft; channers are more likely to be internet libertarians than most other e-subcultures.
you know the asshole who sits in the back of the class, glued to his laptop? the one who smugly interrupts teacher and student alike? the youth who never lacks for anything except friends, but doesn't get along well with people different from him? yeah, that's your average internet libertarian.
