So instead of calling someone a "fag" they could quickly hit the ~ key to give the same meaning. Now they came to this conclusion just by the actual physical appearance of the key, do to its curved and queer nature.

The classic tilde! At least to my knowledge, it's most commonly used for flirting nowadays. Or sounding cute, if you're innocent enough to think that way. Here's an example, showing a message WITH the tilde, and without it:

Example 1: I'm home alone, wanna come over?

When you typed a sentence and accidentally sent the message, to the receiver without it being finished the way you intended. Then you can use ~ to let people know, that you wanna cancel what you just wrote, that you didn't mean what you just typed.

Can also be if you wrote a joke, to tell it is a joke. So people won't take it seriously, so people know you don't mean what you are saying, that it's a joke.

Message to Bobby: Hey Bobby, i was wondering. Do you still have that PlayStation 3?
Johnny: Oops.
Edited message to Bobby: Hey Bobby, i was wondering. Do you still have that PlayStation 3?~
I meant PlayStation 2.

Tom: Hey John, that baseball game you bought a ticket to got cancelled.
John: What no?!?! I payed a lot of money on that crap!!
Tom: Hey it was just a joke man, relax.
John: Yea right, so that is your idea of a joke huh?

Tom: Hey John, that baseball game you bought a ticket to got cancelled.~

How it shouldn't be used: Come over here~
As proof, this sentence doesn't seem sexual without the tilde: Come over here.
