Colloquial. To be denigrated or insulted, often as a means of protest or political expression. The phrase originated in December of 2008, when an Iraqi journalist, Muntadhar al-Zeidi, threw his shoes at United States President George W. Bush, a terrible insult in Islamic tradition.
