Defined by a few large quantity brewers who produce absolute swill, and thousands of small, relatively unknown brewers who, in fact, make some of the best beer in the world, in many cases better than import beers.

Compare Budweiser with a nice, high quality Pyramid beer. Both are american beer, but vastly different in quality and taste.
