Loosely defined, "Metroidvania" is supposed to be a 2D video game style in which the gameplay is focused on considerably non-linear exploration, item retrieval and proper usage of these items in order to fulfill the game's primary objective and achieve the desired outcome.
A combination of "Metroid" & "Castlevania" coined after "Symphony of the Night" (Castlevania game) because of the exploration aspect of the game.
It's a stupid term because games that could be described this way were around before there was ever a Metroid or Castlevania game.
Just a very short list of games that could arguably be classified as Metroidvania or have similar exploration and/or action credited to Metroid that were released well before or around the same time as Metroid:
1) Dizzy the Ultimate Cartoon Adventure
2) The Ultimate Play the Game games like Sabrwulf, Jetpac.
3) The Rocky Horror Picture Show (ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64)
4) Many games with "Treasure Island" in the title
5) Gauntlet
6) Batman (ZX Spectrum)
7) Dandy
8) Saboteur! (good example)
9) Cobra
10) Bruce Lee
11) Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future
and many others that are probably even better examples than these.

1. I like calling non-linear video games Metroidvania because I'm ignorant of games in that style before Metroid and didn't have anything else to compare them to.
2. This game has great Metroidvania replay value because I can go back and take routes I didn't take the first time around.
3. I love this Metroidvania game because I have to figure out where to get and how to use these items and I'm not sure which way to go. It really makes me think a bit.

Get the metroidvania mug.Metroid Other M is the latest installment in the Metroid game series. Metroid Other M takes place after Super Metroid. Samus is flying her ship when she encounters a distress call codenamed 'baby's cry'. She flys to a huge space station called the Bottle Ship, where she meets her former commanding officer Adam Malkovich and the 7th Platoon which she used to fight with. You will play through 3 sectors and also 2 extra ones called Main Sector, (where you begin) and Sector Zero, (where the game ends.) Sector 1 is a jungle, sector 2 is snow, and sector 3 is lava. *SPOILER ALERT* Eventually you meet a girl name Madelin Bergman or MB for short, who is a witness to a murder... one of the members on you platoon is a traitor. Anthony Higgs, a long-time friend of Samus, is thrown into the lava by Ridley, but miraculously survives. It is eventually discovered that the Galactic Federation is creating metroids to use them as a weapon. Adam Malkovich gives his life to save Samus, they have had a rough past. She was rebellious during her days in the Federation, and at the end of each briefing, Adam would say, "No objections, right lady?" Members would give a thumbs up if they understood and agreed with the briefing, but Samus gave a thumbs down. Samus makes it out fine and so does Anthony.

Get the Metroid Other M mug.A game series that got stupid once it's creator got hit by a car... The Game bases around female bounty hunter Samus Aran. Which makes male players more intrested in seeing her face then anything else.
The point of almost every game is to erdicate little bug things called Metroids, which in my opinion look like bubbles with red balls, and teeth. Also fighting these half monster half cyborg aliens called, 'Space pirates..' Metroid will never get as popular as Castlevania mainly because there are only 8 games released all together.
The dumb ass fan games like MP2D don't count. However now the Metroid community is infested with nobody's that spend their time sequnce breaking the games with gameshark codes... Sadly Metroid will never amount to anything lets hope the manga is good...
