a rinnegan is an ocular ability first shown in naruto shippuden by (without spoilers) a member of the akatsuki hidden in the shadows.
the rinnegan is vastly superior compared to other kekkei genkais like the byakuyan or sharigan, demonstrating many benefits with little to no drawbacks.
the appearance of the rinnegan is a black ripple effect on the users eyes, which are fully purple, and it seems those who posses the rinnegan are born with it, just like the byakuyan, whereas the sharigan is an visual genkai that can be activated later in the life of an uchiha clan member.
