emotional affair

A pop psychology term which instills a sense of impropriety when describing Platonic and courtly love (and other forms of intimate non-sexual association). Since the relationships it defines are by definition chaste, its use is misleading and is often used manipulatively.
You call it coffee with a college professor, I call it an emotional affair.

Emotional

Emotional describes someone who has shown a valid human response to a situation. This word is often misused to describe emotionally intelligent women in the workplace. There is a well-documented history of women being labelled as ‘emotional’ and ‘hysterical’ and therefore not equipped to lead.

Even presidential candidates fear being judged as emotional:
“It’s a really delicate balancing act—to be yourself, to express yourself, to let your feelings show, but not in a way that triggers all of the negative stereotypes.” –Hillary Clinton
After a difficult client meeting, Jane became emotional. One of her male colleagues rolled his eyes and the other went over to see if she was okay.

Emotional eating

Emotional eating is compulsive eating of food based on a person’s feelings rather than based on physical hunger and nutritional needs. One does not have to be overweight to fall in this category.

It’s thus common that emotional eaters associate certain food with at least one type of feeling of comfort, relief, joy, pleasure, and so on. To put it another way some types of foods end up being used like a drug or alcohol.

In overcoming emotional eating there is a challenge of separating one’s emotions from food and seeing food for what it is: as a nutritional source for the body. Like any habit forming and compulsive behavior emotional eating can be overcome.
Emotional eating includes when a person is happy he/she feels a compulsion to eat; a compulsion to eat when sad; when tired; a compulsion to eat in order to feel some sense of pleasure; and so on. The obsessive urge to eat is stimulated by emotions not by physical hunger and nutritional needs.

emotionally body-checked

When someone puts you up against the boards emotionally. They beat you down anyway possible without laying a hand on you. Typically, they result in tears.
Today the new general manager of our Chicago office came to town. He met and shook everyone's hand with the exception of me. I was totally emotionally body-checked.
