Rap is a way of life. Many people like my dad even think that rap is a bad influence because all its about is killing cops and smoking weed and all that. Well if you think that please go listen to any song by Tupac Amaru Shakur (Rest In Peace, or any other real rapper. I understnd how you get the idea that rap is about that. A lot of these new rappers sing about that (50 cent, Eminem, G-Unit...) and that is all of the rap that they hear on the radio. Rap is a form of poetry and just like you give Laghston Hughes pespect i think that you should give real rappers respect. Also people think that rap is all black people. Well look at the people in the group The Demigodz there is only one black person out of 6, and there are many other non black rappers like Apathy and Celph Titled.
Rap is my whole life RIP - Tupac, Biggie, Big L, Bun Pun, Eazy-E, and ODB.

Beats and rhymes. Since when did "music" need to justify itself with anything more than rhythm and originality? Leaving aside questions of "poetry," rap IS legitimate music since it is the creative composition of meaningful rhythms and sonic elements that convey emotional meaning - including humor - something many "listeners" seem to lack.
If you deny that rap is "music," then you need to examine your bias. What about other musical expressions that privilege rhythm and timbre over melody? What is your definition of "melody?" Are you listening honestly or through a socially constructed filter of "taste?"

Rap is not music. Music requires 3 things:
1) Use of musical instruments
2) Rhythm
3) Beat

Rap does not have Rhythm, only beat and most often does not use any musical instruments, rather, uses sounds composed on a synthesiser. Hence, rap is not music, it is a form of poetry.
Rap Fan: Dude Mos Def is such a tallented musician!
Person: What genre does he do?
Rap Fan: Rap
Person: That's not music.

A form of "music" characterized by nonexistent harmony, simplistic and repetitive rhythms, and base lyrics. Rap is possibly the worst genre of music in the Western world, though country music is a strong contender. It pales in comparison to the many, vastly superior genres out there, such as jazz, to say nothing of classical.

A genre of music. In it's original form some years ago it was a great form of expression through poetry and beats. However it has turned into a more pop oriented genre and become very generic.
Public Enemy, NWA, and other early rappers made actual music, unlike today's feild of rappers that include Lil Jon, 50 Cent, and Chingy.

Something that the majority of the people posting negative comments on would be listening to if the genre consisted of more caucasian artists...Listen to hip-hop bitch...
face it, Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby sold very well when it was released. Was it a good song? nope. Did it steal a beat? yup. Did Vanilla Ice have the talent to continue his career? nope. And dont put it on the fact that he was a white artist struggling in a black man's world. Answer me this...why didn't the Beastie Boy's have any trouble keeping a career. 1, they maintained a white audience. 2, they had some rap skill; same goes for Eminem....I guarantee that if Eminem was black he would be regarded the same as 50 cent; a no talent MC despite the fact that he would be the far superior MC.
A genre of music. That's all it is. People are against rap saying it has no meaning. People defend rap saying that that's only "gangster rap". HERE'S A HELPFUL HINT, YOU TARDS. PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE RAP DON'T LIKE RAP. PEOPLE WHO LIKE RAP LIKE RAP. NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GET OVER IT.
Some rap fans and some rap haters are complete idiots for being so elitist about MUSIC.
