When the potholes are so plentiful that they've joined together, leaving little "hills" of original tarmac behind which are then the things in the road you need to avoid.

And as a cyclist, if you hit a bad one expect to have to resurface your face - which will happen quicker than the council resurfacing the road.

The roads are so bad in Cambridgeshire there are pothills all over the place.
