An abbreviation that some day stood for 'laughing out loud'. Boomers still use that definition but that word has evolved. LOL with all capital letters means being in a shock.

However lol with all small letters means "Lack of laughter." It is usually used when just acknowledging someones message.

Jake: "Dude, this is Kate my girlfriend."
Paul: "LOL, you are no longer a nerd, nice."

Jake: "Dude, I found a cool place to hang out with our boys."
Paul: "lol, cool."

LOL is an abbreviation (or acronym) for the term ''Laugh Out Loud'' most commonly used in text messages but is used a lot in face to face conversation. A lot of celebrities like KSI and LazarBeam make me LOL.
