Subnotion

Sub·no·tion /sʌbˈnoʊʃən/ noun

1. The acute perception of a hidden social consensus. The distinct, non-paranoid realization that those around you possess shared information or a secret agenda that is being intentionally withheld.

2. The "under-current" of a room. The act of detecting verified shifts in body language, tone, and eye contact that confirm a group is acting in unison against their normal behavioral patterns.
Etymology: From Latin sub (under/below) + notio (a becoming acquainted with, an idea, a conception).

Usage Note: Distinct from paranoia in that a subnotion is triggered by external, observable changes in others rather than internal anxiety.
"Tyler walked into the office and immediately felt a heavy subnotion; the sudden silence and forced smiles from the team confirmed that the rumors were true."
