Youtube Spiral

The spiral you descend into, much like Alice when she was in Wonderland, where you keep falling and have no sense of time. It starts with watching a video of a cat that your friend sent you, clicking a related clip of a baby laughing, to ultimately watching an R rated clip. You then come to your senses and realise you've just wasted 2 hours of your life watching pointless videos and vow never to do that again.

Friend: "What did you get up to today?"

Me: "I started off watching a cat video and then feel into a Youtube Spiral and wasted so many hours watching so many useless videos. I'm never going to fall into a Youtube Spiral again".

Friend: "Did you see the video of the cat playing the keyboard?"

Me: "No. Let me look it up now."

shame spiral

A shame spiral characterizes the loss of self-control over something that makes one feel worthless and pathetic. Due to these feelings of low self-worth and guilt, the action that triggered the shame spiral is repeated and the degradation of one's self continues. It is a cycle that repeats itself, bringing one down further as it repeats. Example triggers for shame spirals could be excesses of junk food, alcohol, meaningless sex, buying unnecessary gifts for oneself and the like.

Out-of-shape Bob: "I had McDonalds for lunch today and now I am ordering myself a pizza. I am on a serious shame spiral. I hate myself. Ugh."

Shopalholic Sue: "My rent check yesterday bounced but today there was this cute pair of shoes on sale and I had to buy them. How do I get out of this shame spiral?"

graveyard spiral

Aviation slang for a situation in which a pilot unwittingly enters a gentle banking turn, ultimately ending up as a spiral dive to the floor. This typically happens to incompetent or inexperienced pilots unable to visually assess the aircraft’s position relative to the horizon. The strong impression of descent leads some pilots to disregard the flight instruments (which will show exactly what’s going on) and try to correct the situation by pulling up, which instead tightens the turn and often leads to certain death. This is extrapolated to situations where a person will stubbornly press on with something extremely stupid despite solid, objective reasons not to.
