Originating from video games, it stands for non-player character. It has a double-edged meaning:

To the person using the term, they are advertising that they have a better sense of perspective and understanding to the world than other people in society.

To everyone listening to that person use that term unironically, they know that the person has a massive empathy deficit and is at best woefully emotionally under-developed, and at worst a raging sociopath.

“What about this dude, Josh Smith?”

“Yeah… I had a quick conversation with him for a few minutes, and he used ‘NPC’ unironically.”

Npc or bot have the same meaning. This means a person who is considered a background character or an insignificant person who acts, talks or walks like an npc video game character. The meaning npc can also be literal, like an npc who is stuck in the matrix and does whatever is told to that person like an npc in a video game.

A non-player character (NPC) is any character in a game that is not controlled by a player.1 The term originated in traditional tabletop role-playing games where it applies to characters controlled by the gamemaster or referee rather than by another player.
