Unlike unit which could be taken as a term of endearment to a buddy, if called a unit. You would be a spun unit if you thought being called a spun unit brought you closer to the sayer. You would be fairly mad / cross while saying so.

Came from a drunk friend of mine who told me that he wanted to punch someone on TV, but slurred before he could get the word out so it came out "spunch". It snowballed from there.
