'Semester' comes from the Latin 'cursus semestris', meaning 'a course of 6 months'. 'Semen' means 'seed' in Latin while 'ovum' means 'egg'.
Interestingly, 'seminar' actually does come from the same root as 'semen', so I guess they could argue about that instead, if they could convince people that eggs are better than seeds as a metaphor for ideas.
