The president Lucas Mangope ruled like a homeland CEO who didn’t want to close the business even when apartheid was ending.
In 1994, right-wing militias like the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging rolled in with pickup trucks trying to save Mangope’s regime… and it ended with chaos, shootings, and three AWB fighters killed on live TV.
