It is an informal phrase very rarely used in writing, due to its reactionary nature. The idiom originates from a passage in Lord of the Flies where a character, Jack, is hunting a pig and notes with some satisfaction that the droppings he has just encountered are steaming. He is pleased by this, as it means a pig must have been there recently.
