Guerilla

(n.) Usually local band of militia who use thier knowledge of the terrain to thier advantage by ambushing and never engaging in open warfare. The Guerilla units are much often smaller than the force they take on, and due to thier fear of open warfare, they are often labelled as cowards by real armies. The Guerillas are usually considered to be more of a terrorist organisation than anything else, and are best countered by another guerilla unit attacking "thier" people. This counter-Guerilla unit will effectively flush them out or recede to the point where they are almost non-problematic.

This has best been seen with the IRA. In the 70's and 80's, Loyalists who believed the British government was going to give in to the IRA took up arms against the IRA. For every IRA attack that took place, a Loyalist one followed. This is not to mention that in the 90's, the Loyalists performed a number of assassinations on seemingly "untouchable" IRA suppliers, members and sympathists. Over this period, the UVF actually killed more people than the IRA did, although this is over-looked. When the number of IRA attacks went down, so did that of the Loyalists, until the "peace" agreements a few years ago. Splinter factions of both will continue to attack eachother, but they know that the IRA will never achieve the goal it set out to do.
Guerilla units are best destroyed by either similar units, or wreckless and intrusive army massives.

guerilla journalism

A form of journalism invented by Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and Nellie Bly. It is the insatiable appetite journalists have to write stories on underreported and neglected topics in a community. These stories are often hard to swallow.

An unruly newsroom, lack of pertinent stories or an epiphany may inspire someone to engage in guerilla journalism.
Mark: Damn Tobey, that story in the paper today, on the homeless, was intense. What the hell came over you?
Tobey: I don't know, man. I guess that was some guerilla journalism.
