Hoosier

Is anyone who is less sophisticated than you.

Origin. Dates back to the 1860's when Pro-South Baptist Indianans moved to St. Louis County and fought Abolitionist German Catholics in a number of battles during the Civil War. Most of the City was Pro-Union and refered to Southern sympathizing County residents as Hoosiers.

Non St. Louis examples are found in the David Mamet penned remake of "We're no Angels" starring Sean Penn and Robt. DeNiro. Penn's Character says... "I look like a Hoosier or something." Also in Joseph Pistones Autobiographical "Donnie Brasco," Sonny Black uses Hoosier as an epithet.

For example if I were an eighth grade graduate then I would think that all those who dropped out in seventh grade were Hoosiers. If I wore a mullet all those with rat tails would be Hoosiers.

Also used in the common quip... "Hoosier daddy," as a joke on someones questionable paternity.

I have a masters degree and live in Portland, OR. To me those folks who live in West County, Clayton, U-City and Ladue that only have Bachelors degrees are Hoosiers

The most widely accepted definition of a hoosier: a hillbilly, hick, white trash, dirt bag, racist, provincial, ethnocentric, and/or scumbag. Typical interests of a hoosier includes: guns, pickup trucks, NASCAR, wife beating, neglecting pets, beating one's wife, mowing the grass, shooting animals, and drinking beer. A hoosier is commonly suspicious of outsiders, and will be uncomfortable in unfamiliar social situations. A hoosier can originate from any part of the world, but are found in highest concentration in the southern U.S. and Indiana (which is also known as the Alabama of the north). The term hoosier is an insult.

"Are you hoosier?"

"Yea good buddy! Let's keep it local! Gonna watch some NASCAR and drink some beer! Yeeee haw! Buddy, you don't have to be shy, I'm hoosier too--you can say all the racist thangs you want."

a very long time ago, there was a man named HOOSA (who-za), he ran the docks on the Ohio River. He only liked to hire folks from indiana to work, because he thought that they worked hard. they became known as Hoosa's men, then just Hoosa(s), then Hoosiers, their are many definition's as i have read, but this seems to be the one that alot of the older people in indiana seem to know, other than that: GO HOOSIERS!!!!!!!! as far as what the canadians say that would be HOSER, HOSE-ER, not Hoosier

Mascot of the best college in the nation - Indiana University. Home of the greatest basketball program in history. Go HOOSIERS!
Also, a nickname for residents of Indiana. People who live in Indiana are called Hoosiers (notice they are not called Boilermakers - mascot of Indiana's rival, Purdue University, which is sucks at life & everything else.)

The Indiana Hoosiers are the best basketball team in the nation.
