People will also just say the acronym passing people down the street. When directed at someone who probably knows the term the use is for humor otherwise it is meant for expressing feelings towards them without the person comprehending.
Tourist passing a South Floridian asks “is this dive bar safe?” Resident replies “fuff” followed quickly by “of course”
