A way of saying that you shouldn't quit you job if you're really bad at something.

When a (girl/boy)friend does something he/she is really bad at you say "Don't quit your dayjob", so they don't think they can make any money on it.

To quit something in a fit of rage.

Originates from online chat programs where an individual would become so upset that they would use profanity at length at one or more other people and quit immediately to avoid any replies.
