Acronym for “Too Fucked Up To Live”.

A literary device where a character in a mentor, guardian, or other caretaker role must kill the person/creature they care for, either to put them out of their misery or in order to prevent further pain or harm.

This may be a consequence of that person’s actions (Of Mice and Men; Better Call Saul, S4E10) or due to the fucked up nature of the situation they find themselves in (Old Yeller; Million Dollar Baby).

In John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”, George determines that Lennie is TFUTL and shoots him in the back of the head while telling him about the rabbits.
