From the German word Krainer, a person from Krain, the German name for the Austro-Hungarian province of Carniola in modern-day Slovenia. Prevalent in the Great Lakes region, the Midwest and Appalachia. Variations include griner (GRY-ner), krainer (KRY-ner) and granish (GRAN-ish), from Krainische, meaning Carniolan. Granish is specific to western Pennsylvania.
