Indie Obscurity Laws (also known as IOLs) are the laws that help indie kids choose their music.
1. Band must be heard of by NOBODY.
2. When heard of by - even by just one person - they are considered mainstream and no good.
3. If ever played on the radio, the band is no longer indie and must be called "overplayed" or "overrated".
4. Must have a ridiculous name (preferably something foreign) like Leidaek, or The Fisher's Leaf, or even Killing All Pigeons.
5. Does not have to be real music. Can be random videogame noises and mumbling.
6. Anybody who doesn't follow these strict laws, has awful, mainstream, commercialized music taste.

Person: Oh, yeah. I like Metro Station, Forever the Sickest Kids, and Owl City.
Indie: Omg. Ur music taste is the most overplayed, unoriginal, crappy taste ever. Go die in a hole or listen to some decent music like -insert indie band name here-.
Person: Wow. You must follow the Indie Obscurity Laws religously.
Indie: Hellz yeah. God forbid me listen to the mainstream crap that you listen to. Idiot.

- What are your plans for this weekend?
- Well, I thought I’d check out the Andy Warhol exhibit with my VIP membership to the museum before heading off to the protest, where I will dress like a hippie, write poetry on my Macbook and vlog. Maybe if I have time, I’ll finish Le Deuxieme Sexe.
- You are so indiecool.
- What are your plans for this weekend?
- Well, I’ve realized that I’m going to die eventually, so I thought I’d just hide in a dark room and think about that. Maybe if I have time, I’ll reread archived A Softer World comics and cry.

1. A term used to describe a band/artist/etc. who does not belong to a big name record label, or no label at all. Though all these shitheads who put definitions here years ago all talk about a relation between "Emo" and "Shit rock music" they are wrong. Indie is not only rock. For every genre of music there is, there is an underground ('Indie', for people who can't keep up) scene behind it. Indie could also refer to the indie culture around it. As much as people want to swear up and down against labeling and the such, it just is what it is. There *is* an indie culture in lingo, interests, CLOTHES, etc. Many people like to spot an "Indie Kid" as anyone in their teens to mid twenties:
-wearing faded skinny jeans
-scruffy hair
-a cardigan, military jacket, pea coat, etc.
-wearing boots all the time
-walk around with an ironic expression on their face
-drink. And then drink some more.
Those are just some of the things a "typical" indie kid would wear or do.
Additional Information; Hipsters are the ones who are somewhat hard to tell apart. Hipsters may look and dress like an Indie Kid, but are somehow different. They may even listen to the same music as Indie Kids, but apparently they are still different.
Hipsters are normally the ones who are just about as indie as Indie Kids except for perhaps one thing (which takes away their indie title): Listening to mainstream.
That's it. Listening to the occasional mainstream.

Uptight Indie Kid #1: Oooh! Can I come to the Teenagers show with you guys!?
Indie Kid #2: No.

Get the indiecore mug.The meaning of "indie" has changed so much. It used to mean "independent," and it was all about being yourself. Now, most people are so caught up with being "indie," they can't see that they're actually not indie. An "indie" girl is a girl who opposes anything of the mainstream. If you're a girl that doesn't listen to mainstream music (which is music signed onto major record labels, like Paramore, and All Time Low), doesn't dress like the mainstream (you don't wear gay crap like Hollister or Abercrombie and Fitch), then you are basically what this world thinks is indie. But, if you are a true indie girl, then you do whatever feels right. Maybe you do listen to Paramore, and maybe you wear Hollister on occasion. But what matters is that you do it because you WANT to, NOT because it's the indie thing to do. And, besides, if ALL your friends are listening to ndie music, doesn't that make it NOT indie? There is a HUGE difference between stereotypical "indie," and true, authentic indie. :)
Ex. 1, stereotypical indie girl: "I'm so indie, posers worship me."
Ex. 2, authentic indie girl: "Indie? What the heck is that? I do what I feel like doing. Is that so bad?"
Ex. 2, authentic indie girl: "Indie? What the heck is that? I do what I feel like doing. Is that so bad?"
