Citizenshipfishing is the act of using the prospect of acquiring citizenship, through marriage, to lure in romance scammers. Citizenshipfishers have no intention of helping the romance scammer gain citizenship in their country. Their primary goal is to reap the benefits that come with being romance scammed such as: being showered with affection, physical intimacy, and having a younger and or attractive partner to brag about. The citizenshipfish often possess qualities that legally disqualify them from being able to sponsor a spouse for citizenship, such as Insufficient funds or criminal records.

The Youtuber Foodie Beauty has been accused of citizenshipfishing her husband, Poopy,by pretending she could afford to sponsor him to move to Canada. She did this with the full knowledge that her two bankruptcies and tax debt disqualify her from spousal sponsorship.
