Debunking Bias

A systematic preference for debunking, disproving, or disconfirming claims—especially those that challenge one's worldview. Debunking Bias is confirmation bias's mirror: instead of seeking confirming evidence, one seeks disconfirming evidence, but only for claims one opposes. The result is just as biased: a one-sided pursuit of error that leaves one's own beliefs unchallenged. Debunking becomes a habit, then an identity, then a bias.

Debunkist Sophism

The use of debunking as ideology rather than method—debunking not to find truth but to dismiss anything that threatens one's worldview. Debunkist Sophism treats "debunked" as a magic word that ends inquiry, regardless of the quality of debunking or the evidence remaining. It's sophistry in skeptic's clothing: using the appearance of critical thinking to avoid actual thought.

Debunkist Moralism

A form of moralism where the practice of debunking false claims becomes not just intellectual correction but moral crusade—treating those who believe false things as not merely mistaken but morally deficient, deserving of contempt rather than education. The debunkist moralist doesn't just correct errors; they condemn the erring, treating belief in pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, or misinformation as evidence of character failure rather than the complex result of social, psychological, and informational factors. Debunking becomes a performance of virtue, a way of displaying one's own superiority while punishing the inferior. The moralism transforms the legitimate project of correcting error into a weapon for self-aggrandizement and social exclusion, losing sight of the goal (helping people believe true things) in favor of the satisfaction of feeling righteous.

Example: "He didn't just explain why the vaccine myth was wrong—he mocked, shamed, and ridiculed anyone who'd ever believed it. Debunkist Moralism: using error as an excuse for cruelty, pretending it's education."

Debunkist Puritanism

A purity culture within debunking communities where the standards for what counts as "proper debunking" become so strict that they function as tests of virtue rather than tools for correction. Debunkist puritanism demands perfect adherence to approved methods, approved sources, approved conclusions—any deviation, any nuance, any acknowledgment of complexity becomes evidence of impurity, grounds for exclusion. The community polices its boundaries relentlessly, condemning those who aren't skeptical enough, who entertain unproven possibilities, who question the orthodoxy. Debunking ceases to be about helping people believe true things and becomes about maintaining the purity of the in-group, distinguishing the truly enlightened from the contaminated masses. The irony is that puritanism reproduces exactly the dogmatic mindset that debunking claims to oppose—just with different content.

Example: "The skeptical forum banned her for suggesting that maybe some alternative medicine had limited value—not because she was wrong, but because she'd violated their purity standards. Debunkist Puritanism: skepticism as orthodoxy, not inquiry."

Google Debunker

A term coined by TikTok creator Filip Zieba, who often covers conspiracy theories and pseudoarchaeology. It is used (by Filip himself) to shame and/or dissuade skeptics of Filip's content by calling them "google debunkers" and implying that a Google search that would disprove his misinformation is itself the misinformation.

Circular Debunking - Debunking in Circles

A form of debunking where the debunking itself relies on assumptions that have been debunked by the very claims being debunked, creating a circular structure. The debunker assumes the falsehood of what they're debunking, uses that assumption to generate debunking arguments, then presents those arguments as proof of falsehood. The circle is invisible to the debunker because their starting assumptions feel like common sense, not like assumptions. Circular Debunking doesn't engage the actual claim—it just performs skepticism within a closed loop that already assumes what it's trying to prove.

A "direct correlation" would mean a correlation of 1. A correlation of 1 is as high as it gets. So I highly doubt the correlation between porn and WHATEVER is 1. A correlation of .7 is HIGH in terms of correlation (apparently). So high that Jordan Peterson cites the correlation when he's talking about the relationship between wealth and sexual selection success. But don't feel bad. You're not the only one using correlation wrong!
