An incorrect, or offensive statement written in earnest that is later, due to backlash, referred to by the author as "a joke", in a feeble attempt to hide the fact that the statement is either a lie, an insult, or both.
People who make "a joke" aren't just cowards, they're dumb as a bag pf bricks for thinking anyone actually believes them.
