Someone who doesn't do drugs, or drink. Others should not care whether someone is straight edge in this sense.

Straightedge

A person who promises never to do drugs, drink, smoke, or have promiscuous sex. They may also abstain from other "taboo" things. However, the name of straightedge is being tarnished by people who act "high and mighty" and think they are better than other people just because they say it.

Ruins the name:
'Hey, I'm a straightedge, I'll NEVER do drugs or drink or smoke like any of you.'
'whoop dee fucking doo, we totally give a shit, and we totally think you're way better than us </sarcasm>'

A good straightedge:
'Hey, wanna go out for a drink and stuff tonight?'
'sure'
*at the bar*
'I'll have a nice, cold beer'
'I'll just have a coke'
'wha?'
'oh, I forgot to mention, I'm what you would call 'straightedge'
'OH, I totally respect that, at least you aren't shoving your beliefs up my ass!</sans-sarcasm>'

straightedge

The principle "don't drink, don't smoke, don't fuck" which came to be in the late 80s by Ian MacKaye and the band Minor Threat.
Most straightedge kids nowadays flaunt the fact that they're straightedge by drawing X's on their hands, wearing clothing that says "Drug Free" or "XXX" or "Poison Free", because for some reason they feel the need to let everyone know they're drug free.
Some (but not all) straightedge kids are sXe because they feel the need to fit in to a group, and they can do so by avoiding toxins.
Straightedge is not to be confused with hardline kids, who are a violent version of straightedge and kick the asses of smokers and drug doers, because for some reason they believe people should not make their own choices.

Straightedge kid: I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHTEDGE! I'm a person just like you, but i've got better things to do than sit around and fuck my head; hang around with the living dead! Snort white shit up my nose, pass out at shows! I don't even think about speed that's just something I don't need! I've got the straightedge!
Kid 2: Um...calm down. I don't need your beliefs shoved down my throat, thanks
Straightedge Kid: I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHTEDGE!
Kid 2: I know. I know.
Straightedge Kid: NEVER WANT TO USE A CRUTCH! I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHTEDGE!
Kid 2: Great. I know.
Straightedge Kid: I'VE GOT THE---
Kid 2: SHUT THE FUCK UP. I GET IT.

straightedge

the word staightedge is used to describe people who have made a life choice to refrain from drinking, drugs, smoking, and sex. there is nothing wrong with the people who have made this choice, and others should accept it, as well as they should accept others life choices.

kid 1: hey want to go to this party? there will be a keg.
Kid 2: no, i'm straightedge
Kid 1: ok, that's fine. i'll see you later.
