A misunderstanding caused by the inability to infer inflection and tone from a text message. Sometimes caused by the sensitivity of the recipient and sometimes by the ambiguity of the sender.

New Impressionism

New Impressionists are a generation of musicians reacting to their impressions of what rock music was when it was still the most viable genre (1950s-90s in all of it's forms from shoegaze to noise to rockabilly). Some might incorrectly call this reaction post-rock, but that would imply somehow being past or being "over" rock music. Though New Impressionism is different from traditional rock music, it is not about being past or "over" anything. Far from it, the unifying theme is a musical reflection on what New Impressionists perceive the reasons and influences of rock music to be, whether it be concious or sub-concious. Some may even go so far as to live their lives as rock musicians were supposed to have, and to emulate the song structures and instrumental tambres they dabbled in. However, New Impressionist music can actually be quite different or strange, as New Impressionism is about a reaction, not about directly copying - it is an impression of what rock music was, not a snapshot of its exact reality, though some artists do get literal in their reactions and interpretations.

The Black Lips, showcasing New Impressionism, emulate the recording style and song structure of garage rock and the antics of punk heroes of the past.

The type of person who absolutely excels at first impressions, but is usually actually a bit of a twat beneath this thinly construed surface. He or she will greatly impress people and gravitate attention on first meetings, as onlooking witnesses who know them better suppress the deep annoyance this causes.

- Oh my, look how Nathan is just raking in all the attention from those girls.
- It makes my blood boil. How can they not see he is such a raging twat.
- Well, he exudes all that confidence and genuinely believes his own bullshit.
- Yeah he's definitely a First Impressionist, big time.

JLS Impression

Performing a "JLS Impression" generally involves courting, flirting, admiring etc. young girls, but not so young that it becomes creepy and illegal.

This is derived from the fact that the British "band" JLS's audience tends to consist of 15/16 year old girls. Hence, if a guy more than 2 years the said-girl's senior makes a move, he is doing a JLS impression.

"Dude, did you see Carl's new girlfriend?" "No, I haven't met her yet" "Mate, she's 16!" "So?" "Carl's 18, he's doing his JLS Impression again!"

Professor Green: "I might even cover my naked body in sticky tape and run through All-Saints and come out doin' my JLS impression!"
