They DO know how to read music (yeah drummers in the band also play mallet instruments in concerts, what a concept) and have the most challenging music, but band is NOT their life. They have to master playing 50+ different insturments, which is why most people find it so fun. Band directors usually blame the drumline for their problems.

Despite what the rest of the marching band might think, the drumline CAN read music and normally will throw down beats on demand. The drumline is the backbone and the heartbeat of a marching band and without it all the other cocky musicians wouldn't be able to keep time. The rest of the band is intimidated by the drumline because the drumline knows how to play ten times the amount of instruments they do, and spends more time practicing than they could even imagine.
