A person, usually from the south and caucasion, who is not ashamed of their heritage, has faith in God, hunts, fishes (can provide food and not have to be on welfare to do it). Down home, true, not fake and can spell unlike some people who submit!

adjective, noun. Word used to describe rural Americans or things associated with them and implies haveing lower standards of income and education. Includes but is not limited to those who live in the Appalacian Mountain Range, the Deep South, and the Mid West. Coined during the West Virgina Mine Wars were mine workers tied red bandanas around there neck as a form of uniform during mine strikes.

Scottish "Covenanters" or Presbyterians who rejected the Catholic and Anglican churches to signify their status as Covenanters adopted wearing red neckerchiefs. They were soon called “red necks.” These same Scots immigrated to the region around Ulster Ireland and finally the new world in the American Colonies. Their descendants inhabited most of the southern and rural places of the United States.
