A Hawaiian local slang word for a large muscular guy or gal.

The orgin of merf came from a 25lbs siamese cat named Oba in 1989. This cat would make the sound when happy, sad, being lazy, or just walkng around.

The group of kids around Oba started to mimic the cat in saying merf and it spread from there as a nonsense word that can mean anything, yet nothing.

For verification, search usenet posts back in the early 90s, and Northern Lights BBS.
