How junior enlisted while away their service time: smoking cigarettes and joking around with each other. Typically done in small groups when on break, standing post, or at quarters.
See those embassy guards standing post at the gate? They smoke cigarettes and bullshit all day. Smoke and joke. Most of them will never make rank.

Person A: Why was the crab being so mean?
Person B: Why?
Person A: Because it was feeling crabby!
Person B: Ugh... Enough with the great grandpa jokes.

Person 1:"I'm an alien, I mean what"
2 minutes later, while talking about living in another planet
Person 2: "Shhh don't blow their cover"
Person 3: "late response much? That was a snapchat joke"

When you tell one, others are SUPPOSED to laugh -sometimes even yourself. But for some reason this is very often not the case.
Dad-jokes are just bad and for some teenagers embarrassing.
Mom-jokes are completely made up and when you get them they’re just as bad, but you get kinda excited for getting the pun of something that wasn’t necessarily understandable.
