In many countries it's a synonym for "boy" though in Australia it also means "faggot" or "wanna be gangster"

England:

Australia:
*'rebel' kids trying to act tough*
Everyone else: "Look at those lads. I wonder if they realize that everyone else hates them and that they look like scrawny faggots."

Burwood Lad

The term given to a young male between the ages of 12-19 who generally spend their day sitting on side streets of Burwood a suburb in the inner west) smoking in attempt to be "cool". They can usually be clearly identified by wearing the following brands of clothing: Nike, Adidas, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren... This can be accessorised with a Gucci Hat.

I don't want to go to Burwood because there are so many Burwood Lads around who smoke bud and pop caps thinking they're hectic.
