With the quick moving clouds, moonlight changes rapidly between lighting up the area and leaving it in darkness. The term pirates moon comes from the fact when the moon can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the angle. On the ocean the moonlight could help one conquer an enemy or could blind one into crashing into the shores.
