Tabloid Math

Juicy talks in mathematical circles on who are working on which projects or proofs, or who have been offered tenure, especially among the “office politicians” who were unprovenly promoted based on their close or intimate relationship with the boss rather than on their published papers and teaching awards.
Stabbing each other on the back, bitching about promoted or demoted fellow colleagues, and the like are part and parcel of tabloid math conversation, which preoccupies the minds of thousands of frustrated or marginalized mathematicians at lunchtime.

Symbolless Math

A politically correct term for “Elementary school math for the simple-minded or numerically challenged.” Math concepts explained in layman terms, which is targeted at those who are allergic to hearing or seeing numerical notations or equations.
Like sugarless chocolate or vegetarian chicken, promoters of symbolless math show that no groups or peoples should be excluded, especially the math-anxious or mathophobic—no one is beyond mathematical comprehension.

Musk Math

Brain-unfriendly math questions that leverage on the wealth of South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, whom mainland Chinese worship as “King of Mars” or “Rocket Man” for building flying cars and colonising the cosmos—they view Mr. Musk as a coldblooded god, compared to Jack Ma, whom they call a “performing monkey.”
Two Musk Math questions are:
a) Guesstimate how many face masks China could produce from billionaire Musk’s obscene wealth.
b) If Mr. Musk spent ten thousand dollars every day, would he have enough money left by the time he experienced his last heartbeat?

Predatory Math

When math educators or publishers turn things around, from being a prey to a predator, by outwitting their competitors, because they know what they have to do to be better than them.

No Mask, No Math

The slogan by math educators for their pseudoscientific or conspiracist audience, who argue that mask wearing or social distancing is ineffective in protecting them and others, especially for those who now have a certain degree of immunity after recovering from Covid-19.
Pastors tell their congregations: “no mask, no mass”; principals tell their classes: “no mask, no math.”

Sharpie Math

When students who didn’t do well or flunked their math test or exam falsely claimed that they were penalized or prejudiced because they used Sharpie instead of ballpoint pens.
That SAT and GRE examiners disadvantage suburban white students vis-à-vis their Asian and Hispanic peers because of Sharpie math bias is the latest conspiracy propagated by QAnonists and alt-right Trumpists to vent out their mathematical frustration and anger.
