Bumpkin

A bastardization of the word pumpkin, Bumpkin is a softener for hillbilly, hick, farmer, Hayseed, not to be confused with Redneck. In this vernacular a man referred to by these types would be a pumpkin, or a little sweet, read as Gay. The softening to Bumpkin usually gives it a more benign meaning like he's harmless or he's simple. Not minded, just without nefarious intentions. Which makes him an excellent Rube.

Country Bumpkin. Look at this Bumpkin straight off the farm. This Bumpkins' coming over hear to buy a used car.
