if a person smiles a lot, but you notice cuts on their wrists & discomfort around certain people, they may be emo.

Emo 

Emo is short for emotional, or emotionally hard-core. It is used to define either hard-core music, a hard-core style of clothing, and even lifestyles. The most common use of the term is to describe one who is clinically depressed, and possibly cuts themselves, writes depressing poetry, seems homosexual, wears eyeliner, usual attire is black,overreacts to small problems often and even writes suicide notes.

An emo person

An emo song (lyrics: slit my wrist, etc.)

Emo clothing (usually black, BUT NO FISHNETS! FISHNETS ARE GOTH!!! Thick eyeglasses, wristbands,etc)

Emo styled hair (black, bangs hang in face & usually cover up one eye)

Emo bands- My Chemical Romance, the Cure, Jimmy Eat World, Placebo, Hawthorne Heights, etc.

Any person who may cut themselves for no other reason than to experience, as a way to release pain, a morbidy more plesurable rush in life....IE Cutting myself makes me feel: more complete, less of a loser, or is done as a form of self punishment.
