Forced into a position or situation where, under normal circumstances, wouldn't have fit or belonged otherwise.

Much like the device the term was named after, it is awkwardly insisting something to be where it shouldn't.

The producer insisted the writers shoe horned a romantic sub-plot in what was supposed to just be a horror-themed crime drama.

"There was no opportunity in the conversation for Chris to talk about this thing that was only interesting to him, so he shoe-horned it into the conversation with an awkward segway."

On the bob and tom radio show whenever a news story involves shit in some way they honk the feces horn

There was a story in the news about a woman who fell from the upstairs balcony of her apartment, as luck would have it a maintenance crew was working on the septic tank so she landed in a pile of raw sewage which broke her fall and she was not injured. (Bob and Tom honk the feces horn)

Inception Horn

The horn featured in the original score for the Christopher Nolan film Inception, composed by Zack Hemsey. The horn takes the form of a mammoth trombone backed up by heavy percussion (often repeated multiple times for maximum results of 'Inceptionation') that is played at intervals throughout the course of the composed piece of music to create a more than dramatic atmosphere, giving the characters a valiant amount of purpose.

Side effects of frequent exposure to the Inception Horn may include "the dream collapsing", "checking your totem" and everything happening in slow motion.

Fart Horn

The sound emits when the ass has created a complete seal with the toilet seat and a fart is produced, vibrating through the toilet and makes a distinguished low-pitched sound, audible through walls and floors.

Planted comfortably in a stall in a restroom, Jim heard what could be non-other than a fart horn sounding from the stall two stalls down from him.
