A teenager, usually a caucasian male, who's parents never beat him enough when he was young, causing him to develope a warped sense of reality where he has it rough and it's okay to listen to Insane Clown Posse. Subject is also characterized as wearing constrictive clothing, listening to more lame music, bearing the "devil lock"(greasy bangs sweapt sideways to cover half the face and make the subject appear mysterious) and sporting an ugly girlfriend to compensate his lack of sex life.
That kid who works the soft-serve at Dairy Queen and lost his ear gage in your heath blizzard. He's emo.

A subculture which started out as a music genre with influences from the punk/alternative scene of Washington D.C. in the late 1980s. In recent years, it has expanded to become an entire subculture. Originally, followers of the emo subculture were kids who didn't fit into the mainstream and considered themselves to be non-conformists. Sadly, however, the emo label has become so popular that nowadays most emos are kids who grew up living life exactly the same as every other fucking kid, and now they have decided to go emo, simply because it is what every other kid is doing. However, some emo kids are those who turned emo before it became the mainstream, and these are the true non-conformists.
True non-conformist free-thinking emo kid: Oh, look, you're reading trainspotting! I love Irvine Welsh!
Mindless conformist 'emo' kid: What the fuck you faggot. Reading's for gays and pussies. Go watch wrestling like evryone else.

The other 1200 definitions explain the term itself and its origins better than I can here, but it is important to note that the music and accompanying culture currently labeled "emo" by the press and popular media (as well as by the kids themselves) is essentially the same music and culture we all would have simply referred to as "alternative" a decade ago, and which has been shoveled into the media-created pigeonhole formerly occupied by the (arguably artificial) subgenre of "alternative" music known as "grunge" back in the '90s.
Wrong: I'm feeling so emo because my girlfriend left me. I think I'll cut myself.
Right: I wanted to go in the pit at the show but the last band was emo and some chick started kissing me.
