builds character

Any task, activity or event which is painful, humiliating, upsetting, violent or distressing to the person experiencing the said task, activity or event.

A sarcastic use of the phrase, as most people believe that the difficult events in our lives contribute the most to our character and personality. Sadly, pyschologists would tend to agree; Not for the better in many cases.
A:"My boyfriend just called. . . He's left me!"
B:" Really?"
A:" For my BROTHER!!!! (Sniff)"
B:"Well . . . It builds character, something like that. . . "
A:"Oh, go kiss a walrus!"

Super Fucking Obnoxious 1500 Character Limit

I've seen definitions 10,000 "characters" long, but for some reason we're restricted to only 1500 now. Which sucks.
The Super Fucking Obnoxious 1500 Character Limit is the worst thing to happen to this site in a long time... some definitions are meant to be long, people!

Sophia Character Sketch Paradox

In an academic situation: When a friend points out a suggestion for your writing, but being the arrogant person you are, refuse to accept their suggestion, resulting in deducted marks. Afterwards, they will proceed to get mad for the suggestion they were oblivious to and continually vent about it.
Friend 1: Hey, how did you do on the English essay?
Sophia: I lost two marks for not using the word reserved instead of cautious!
Friend 1: But we told you to use that and you didn't listen!
Friend 2: Well, that's the Sophia Character Sketch Paradox in action!

Out Of Character

When a character with an already well defined personality acts in a way that they normally would not. They do or say something that they as a character would not normally say, given the personality the writer has already assigned them. This happens very often when your show/book/story has a self-insert or Mary Sue
“This orc barbarian who has killed 13 dragons just got scared of a bee! Man that seems out of character!”

flat character

Usually a minor character but sometimes main characters inadvertently fall into this category, are characters that do not undergo any drastic changes mentally and emotionally throughout the course of a book, series, movie, television show, etc. They usually have only a few known traits that they are known for usually consisting of stock character qualities. See character development.
Laura was a flat character; she was only there to help move the story along as she was only known as vivacious and a good cook, nothing about her personality changes by the end of the book.

Bella Swan is a flat character, she undergoes no growth throughout the course of Twilight. She never learns a lesson from her mistakes because her actions never result in any consequences.
