Composite Armor

Armor constructed from multiple layers of different materials (ceramics, metals, plastics, fibers like Kevlar or UHMWPE) bonded together to achieve synergistic defensive properties greater than any single component. It works on the "layered defense" principle: a hard ceramic outer layer shatters and blunts a projectile, a fibrous middle layer catches the fragments and absorbs energy through deformation, and a tough backing plate stops any final penetration. It's lightweight, modular, and highly effective against a range of threats.

Example: The body armor plates worn by modern soldiers are Composite Armor, typically a ceramic strike face (like boron carbide) backed by ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers. The armor on a main battle tank, like Chobham armor, is a more complex composite of ceramics, metals, and air gaps designed to defeat shaped-charge jets.

complexity bias

Complexity bias is a cognitive bias where individuals tend to favor complex explanations, theories, or solutions over simpler ones, even when the simpler ones are more likely to be correct or effective. This preference often stems from the belief that complex ideas are more sophisticated, intelligent, or thorough.

Whenever I ask my friends for advice on a simple problem, they always dive into some wild complexity bias, making everything sound way more complicated than it needs to be!

A "gentleman's gentleman" who's mainly tasked with proofreading his fumble-fingered master's hastily-composed missives, essays, and other literary creations, pointing out and/or correcting all the errors, and then either passing the resulting "perfected" paperwork back to his boss, or sending said correspondence on its way to it intended recipients.

As clever and talented as Jeeves was, it's entirely probable that he could have also served the dim-witted Bertie Wooster in the role of text-composition butler; perhaps he might instead have suavely suggested that, "You might want to consider a modern word-processor, Sir... it will underline spelling and grammar errors for you, so that you can correct them immediately as you go along."
