SAMBA

(v.) To "samba" : To lose muscle control in extremities after apnea. Usually occurring in spearfishers who hyperventilate (purge too much CO2) before a breath hold - this is extremely dangerous and why you never dive alone!

Always dive with a buddy and never practice "static breath hold" techniques while near water. CO2 regulates the body's exchange of gasses so if you purge too much you will use more oxygen while diving. Take a freediving course to learn a proper "freediving breathe-up"

Here's an example of a diver SAMBAing during ocean spearfishing:

Samba

The chugging rhythms of Samba traveled from the predominantly black state of Bahia in northern Brazil, down to Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century. There it spawned several offshoots, among them the loud, chanted Samba Enredo which powers annual Carnaval parades and competitions to this day, and Samba-Cancao, which features more complex harmonies and lyrics. Instrumentation (including the size of the percussion section) varies with style and place, but Samba roots are strong in its offspring: Bossa Nova, Tropicalia, and MPB (Brazilian pop). Samba itself is meanwhile alive, vibrant, and well at each year's Carnaval.

samba

Traditional dance and music form of Brazil, it has many possible variations, speeds and hybrids with other dances. Unlike "salsa", the parallel but very different type(s) of traditional dancing in Spanish-speaking Latin America, samba has more hip movement and more of a "shuffle" feel to it, based on its softer ease on (and around) the beat, coming from the polyrhythms of the Afrikan percussion music that traditionally accompanied it. However, see also lambada
Samba still thrives in variation in the music of the new bands especially of the North-East of Brazil, e.g. Nacao Zumbi, Mundo Livre S/A, Mestre Ambrosio.
